Many people are familiar with the famous Red and Blue chair by Dutch designer Gerrit Rietveld (1888 – 1964). It is simply constructed using utilitarian materials, has wonderful style but can be uncomfortable for some with its flat seat and back. When I was looking to build my own chair utilising recycled pallet timber and that paid homage to Rietveld, I wanted to do something that was a little more comfortable . In searching the literature on Danish 20th century furniture designers I came upon the work of Borge Morgensen (1914 – 1972) and his Sled Chair seemed to fit the bill. The resulting design uses a simple overlapping joint arrangement like Rietveld and a gently curved seat and back inspired by Morgensen.
